The overall goal of this research
core is to understand the relationship between environmental
exposures and human health by focusing research efforts
on vulnerable human populations. In particular, the
Pulmonary Biology and Disease Core facilitates the development
and completion of collaborative studies in the areas
of occupational and environmental lung disease. Consistent
with the overall goals of this Core, the specific aims
are to:
- Train promising young scientists who are interested
in understanding how various aspects of human vulnerability
(age, geographic factors, co-morbid diseases, nutritional
status, economic status, race, or genetics) affect
the relationship between environmental exposures and
lung disease. A portion of the support for this training
is obtained from established NIH supported training
programs in environmental health, molecular/human
genetics, and pulmonary pathobiology.
- Mentor young scientists and assist them in developing
independent studies in environmental lung disease.
Part of this support will be via Center-supported
pilot grants; NIH training awards will also be pursued.
- Foster collaborative research among Center investigators.
- Function as consultants for scientists from any
area to pursue studies related to the impact of vulnerability
on the relationship between environmental exposures
and environmental lung disease.
- Enhance communication among investigators interested
in environmental lung disease.
