THE CLIMATE CHANGE POLICY PARTNERSHIP is a
joint venture between Duke Energy, Duke University and other academic
institutions and corporate partners
In September, 2005, Duke
Energy and Duke University launched The Climate Change Policy Partnership,
a four-year initiative to develop solutions for addressing climate
change that are good for the environment, good for business, and good for
the economy. The Partnership has engaged three
corporate partners to date and a similar number of academic units
in evaluating the environmental and economic impacts of a wide-range
of scientific, technological, conservation, and policy options. This
unbiased research and analysis will then be shared with corporate, government
and environmental leaders within “safe havens” in which all
options can be explored and the costs and benefits of each rationally
weighed. Duke Energy’s
$2.5 million commitment is covering upfront organizational costs
and the initial research required to establish the full scope of the
project. ConocoPhillips
and MeadWestvaco joined the partnership in fall 2006 to support Phase
II of the project; additional corporate partners are being sought for
Phase II, which began in January, 2007.
The Climate Change Policy Partnership utilizes Duke University’s
renowned Nicholas School of the Environment, its
Center on Global Change and the groundbreaking new Nicholas Institute
for Environmental Policy Solutions, in addition to other academic
units, to answer four key questions:
- What is the full range of possibilities for reducing carbon in the atmosphere?
- What are the environmental and economic impacts of each option?
- What is the proper mix of solutions?
- How can we best communicate these finding to corporate, government and environmental leaders to ensure that America adopts an energy policy that is good for all sectors and the environment?
Once research is complete and these questions answered, the Partnership
will host one or more meetings to share findings and lead solution-oriented
discussions based upon the true costs of various options.
Opportunities for Partnership Members
There are a number of distinguishing features of The Climate Change
Policy Partnership:
- Partnership includes a seat on the project’s Advisory Board and the opportunity to suggest topics for inquiry.
- Research will be conducted, in part, by masters and Ph.D. students bearing the designation of their corporate sponsor (e.g. Duke Energy Fellows). This is an arrangement that provides educational opportunities for students and unique opportunities for corporate partners interested in recruiting new employees already familiar with their business issues.
- Partners will have prominent roles in the forums to present findings, share perspectives and develop recommendations.
- The cost of partnership is payable over three years
