Web Developer

The Children's Environmental Health Initiative (CEHI) has an immediate opening for a web developer with a focus on geospatial applications. CEHI is a research, education, and outreach program committed to fostering environments where all children can prosper and is located within the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University. This position bears responsibility for designing, building, and maintaining multiple websites to support new and ongoing collaborative projects for CEHI. Emphasis will be placed on developing spatial related online content, as well as web-GIS applications.

General Qualifications:

  • Education: BA or BS degree
  • Experience: 1 -2 years web development
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team-based environment
  • Ability to multitask

Technical Requirements:

  • Fluency in HTML, XHTML, CSS, Javascript
  • Working knowledge of the LAMP development environment
  • Demonstrated experience designing/prototyping websites
  • Experience developing/maintaining website content

Desired Experience with:

  • Plone or Drupal Content Management System
  • Adobe products (Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash)
  • Postgres or other enterprise database systems
  • Geographic Information Systems
  • Online mapping applications and data map viewers (MapServer, Post GIS)

GIS Analyst

The Children's Environmental Health Initiative (CEHI) at the Nicholas School of the Environment, Duke University currently has a position opening for a GIS analyst. CEHI is a research, education, and outreach program committed to fostering environments where all children can prosper. Our work focuses on applying GIS data and techniques to a wide-range of environmental, health, and social problems. The position provides GIS support to a series of spatially-based research projects focused on health outcomes. Specific tasks include: management of GIS research projects, data management and analysis, communication of analysis results, and developing GIS training materials.

General Qualifications:

  • Master's degree and equivalent course work in geographic information systems, geography, planning, landscape architecture, civil engineering, computer science, or a related field, and one (1) year (including coursework and internships) working with geographic information systems
  • OR

    Bachelor's degree in Geography, Cartography, Natural Resources, Computer Science, Planning, Environmental Science or a related field, and two (2) years of experience (including coursework and internships) working with geographic information systems.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to work in a team-based environment
  • Ability to multitask

Technical Requirements:

  • Expertise with ArcGIS and/or ArcView

Desired Experience with:

Community Surveyor

The position of community surveyor is associated with a new grant aimed at addressing community concerns regarding environmental contributors to cancer health disparities among high-risk African American families.

Three community surveyors will be trained to gather information from African American families in Durham, North Carolina about their knowledge and perceptions of cancer, cancer risks, prevention, and treatment. The community surveyors will hold an important responsibility of acting as a liaison between the community and the project team. This role will include administering surveys (that will include questions on personal health history), answering questions about cancer and the environment, and accurately transferring survey data into electronic formats. The individual will be selected based on 1) dedication to community service, 2) lay knowledge of breast cancer, and 3) a working relationship with African American communities in Durham. This position also requires successful completion of Duke University's human subject research ethics training.

Breast cancer survivors, those with a family member or friend affected by breast cancer, women, and minorities are especially encouraged to apply. Minimum qualifications include a 2-year Associate's Degree, excellent communication and organization skills, a passion for community interaction, and the ability and desire to work within a team setting. This full time position includes full Duke University benefits.

Biostatistician

The Children's Environmental Health Initiative (CEHI) at the Nicholas School of the Environment seeks to fill a biostatistician position on a study investigating the social, environmental, and host factor influences on pregnancy outcomes. This position supports a series of spatially-based projects focused on early childhood and maternal health. The successful candidate will be able to perform a wide variety of statistical analyses, from basic analyses to more advanced modeling. He/she will work well independently as well as within a larger interdisciplinary team. Experience working with large datasets is a plus as is fluency with SAS and/or R (although other statistical programs are supported). The position involves the preparation of written manuscripts and oral presentations that summarize the analysis of data, interpret the findings, and provide conclusions and recommendations. Bachelor's or Master's degree in Biostatistics (or strong statistical background) required. Experience in public health, children's health, environmental health, or public policy preferred. Interested in gaining research experience? Want to work in a fun, educational, and collaborative environment? The Children's Environmental Health Initiative (CEHI) at the Nicholas School of the Environment, Duke University, directed by Dr. Marie Lynn Miranda, is currently looking for undergraduate research assistants. CEHI is a research, education, and outreach program committed to fostering environments where all children can prosper. Undergraduate research assistants participate in a series of spatially-based research projects focused on health disparities with the long-term opportunity to learn GIS and develop research skills in environmental health. Work study students welcome.
