mlm Marie Lynn Miranda, Ph.D. -- Director

Dr. Marie Lynn Miranda is an associate professor in Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment and Department of Pediatrics, and serves as the founding Director of CEHI. Dr. Miranda's educational background is rooted in economic and mathematical modeling; her professional experiences integrate environmental health sciences with sound social policies. She has taught courses and conducted research on children's environmental health, with a particular emphasis on reproductive and developmental toxicants, childhood lead exposure, and allergen and asthma triggers. Dr. Miranda has applied spatial analytic approaches to a wide range of environmental issues. She also has extensive experience running training, research translation, and outreach programs, especially as they relate to disadvantaged populations. Dr. Miranda has an active research portfolio, with funding from the USEPA, NIH, CDC, the National Association of Chronic Disease Directors, the USDA, the State of North Carolina, the Mary Duke Biddle Foundation, and The Duke Endowment. She maintains a deep and abiding personal and professional interest in environmental and social justice.

rebecca Rebecca Anthopolos -- Associate in Research

Rebecca Anthopolos, Associate in Research, serves as a statistical analyst at CEHI. Her research and statistical analysis at CEHI focuses on determining social and environmental factors contributing to disparities in birth outcomes in the South. She completed her Master's in Economics from Duke University in May 2007 and also holds a Bachelor of Arts in International Relations with an emphasis on international development from Connecticut College.

veronica Veronica Berrocal -- Associate in Research

Dr. Veronica J. Berrocal is a PostDoctoral Associate at SAMSI (Statistical and Applied Mathematical Sciences Institute) and is affiliated with the Department of Statistical Sciences at Duke University. Her research at CEHI focuses on developing and applying spatio-temporal models to birth outcome data. Dr. Berrocal holds a B.S. in Mathematics from the University La Sapienza of Rome (Italy), a M.Sc. in Mathematics from the University Joseph Fourier of Grenoble (France), a M.Sc. in Statistics from Michigan State University (2002) and a Ph.D. in Statistics from the University of Washington (2007).

david David Bynum -- Business Manager

David Bynum, the CEHI Business Manager, holds a BA from Duke University in Biological Anthropology, and a Master of Environmental Management from the Nicholas School of the Environment at Duke University with a concentration in Conservation Biology. Prior to joining CEHI, David worked implementing ecosystem management on a U.S Air Force base, developed ecosystem management plans for the Chesapeake Bay watershed for the Wildlands Network (formerly The Wildlands Project), and spent 7 years at the Duke Clinical Research Institute as a medical publications manager and project leader.

sharon Sharon Edwards -- GIS Analyst

Sharon Edwards, Associate in Research, serves as a GIS and statistical analyst. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Sciences and Policy from Duke University, as well as Master's of Statistics with a concentration in biomedical statistics from North Carolina State University. Her work at CEHI focuses on statistical analysis and data management for the Southern Center on Environmentally Driven Disparities in Birth Outcomes (SCEDDBO). Her research interest lies in the application of computer science, data management, and spatial analysis techniques to address health disparities and environmental justice.

frescos Christopher Fresco -- GIS Analyst

Christopher Fresco, Associate in Research, works as a GIS Analyst. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Geography from the University of Washington. His research interests include web-based map application development and GIS analysis. At CEHI, his work and responsibilites include GIS training, database management, map production, and web maintenance.

melvin Melvin Gaddy, IV -- Research Assistant

Melvin Gaddy is a high school intern working with the Built Environment project and is part of the CEHI Field Sampling team. He is currently a junior at JDC-Clements Early College High School. His research interests include the effects of different environments on human health. In his free time he likes to relax and be with friends.

Doug Hastings graduated from Duke in 2009 with a major in Environmental Science and Policy and a second major in Earth and Ocean Sciences. At CEHI, Doug is interested in environmental justice, the impacts of climate change, and community outreach. He loves using GIS.

andy Andy Hull -- GIS Analyst

Andy Hull works as a GIS analyst at CEHI. He holds a Bachelor of Arts in Geography as well as a Master's degree in Information Science both from UNC Chapel Hill. His current interests are focused on building web-based applications that have a strong spatial component and developing traditional web sites using a variety of programming languages. This includes specific tasks such as web design, spatial analysis, geographic data development, information architecture, and user-centered systems design.

amber Amber Ingram -- Associate in Research

Amber Ingram, Associate in Research, is a study coordinator for CEHI's Clinical Obstetrics Study and field research assistant for the Community Assessment project. Ms. Ingram graduated from Duke University in 2006 with a BS in Environmental Science with focus on Biogeochemistry and a Sociology minor. She is broadly interested in the complex relationships between social inequality, environmental exposures and conditions, and quality of health.

Anika Juhn, Associate in Research, prepares, manages, and processes data for use in geospatial analyses. She also creates maps for a variety of purposes, including public presentations and printed publications. Anika holds a master's degree in Geography from the University of Oregon and a bachelor's degree in Environmental Science from Northern Arizona University.

martha Martha Keating -- Associate in Research

Martha Keating is an Associate in Research at CEHI where her work focuses primarily on community outreach and research translation. She holds a B.S degree from the University of New Hampshire and a M.S. in Environmental Science and Engineering from the School of Public Health at the University of North Carolina. Martha's career includes 10 years as an environmental scientist with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency where her work dealt with hazardous air pollutants and regulatory authorities of the Clean Air Act. She was the project director and a principal author of the EPA's Mercury Study Report to Congress, for which she was awarded the EPA's Silver Medal. In 1998, Martha founded Keating Environmental, a consulting firm whose work focused on power plant environmental impact issues, including mercury and other air toxics, and power plant combustion waste. Clients included numerous national, regional and state environmental advocacy groups. Martha joined CEHI in October 2006 where her current interests are addressing health disparities and environmental justice issues through policy and regulatory change.

gretchen Gretchen Kroeger -- Associate in Research

Gretchen Kroeger, Associate in Research, holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Samford University and a Master of Environmental Management from Duke University. While dabbling a tad in geospatial analysis, her primary research interests include health outcomes with an environmental causal mechanism, environmental justice, and more specifically, the impacts of mining on community health.

jerrie Jerrie Kumalah -- Associate in Research

Jerrie Kumalah, Associate in Research, works with the clinical obstetric study at CEHI. She graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2006 with a BA in African Studies and Health and Societies. In 2009 she graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with an MPH in Health Behavior and Health Education. Her research interests include reproductive health and disparities in access to health services.

pam Pamela Maxson, Ph.D. -- Research Associate

Dr. Pamela Maxson is Project Manager for the Southern Center on Environmentally Driven Disparities in Birth Outcomes (SCEDDBO) and the research coordinator for CEHI's Clinical Obstetrics study. She has been teaching at Duke since 1995 for the Human Development Certificate Program and the Psychology Department focusing on child, adolescent, and lifespan development. Her interests lie in maternal and child health and health disparities including the societal, familial, and individual influences on outcomes.

emily Emily Lynne Modlin -- Research Assistant

Emily Modlin is a senior at Duke University. She will receive her BA in Psychology with a human development concentration, as well as a double minor in Spanish and Education, in May of 2010. She has been an undergraduate research assistant at the Children's Environmental Health Initiative since her sophomore year. She has a special interest in educationally based interventions targeting minority populations.

Mollie Oudenhoven, Associate in Research, holds the quality assurance/quality control position for CEHI's Clinical Obstetrics Study. She graduated from Duke University in 2009 with a BSE in Biomedical Engineering and a focus in pre-medicine. She is interested in the correlation between health disparities and social and environmental factors, especially as they relate to children.

alicia Alicia Overstreet -- Data Manager

Ms. Alicia Overstreet, Associate in Research, graduated from Duke University in 1999 with a Bachelor of Science in Biology, and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill School of Medicine. A native of Nicaragua, she possesses a keen interest in environmental justice and disparate social and environmental risk. Her research interests include environmental toxicology and risk analysis with a special focus on maternal and child health.

chris_paul Christopher Paul -- Associate in Research

Christopher Paul, Associate in Research, received a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Science from Duke University in 2005. His senior thesis and research work focused on the relationship of communities and the environment. He was a member of the CEHI team after graduation and is excited to return after serving two years in the United States Peace Corps. Chris worked in the Islamic Republic of Mauritania as an environmental education volunteer with his wife Anna Bauer. At CEHI, Chris works in a variety of roles helping to advance CEHI's mission.

nancy Nancy Schneider -- Associate in Research

Nancy Schneider works as a GIS Technician at CEHI. She graduated in 2008 from Middlebury College with a major in geography. Her role at CEHI is to support the GIS research team in data management, spatial analysis and georeferencing. She is interested in the interaction between a community and the space it occupies, specifically how this relationship impacts disparities in health and education, social capital, and sustainability of development strategies.

scott Scott Schwartz -- Associate in Research

Scott Schwartz is a third year PhD student in the Department of Statistical Science at Duke University. He is involved in the Detailed Birth Record project at CEHI. His work specifically focuses on the the birth outcomes of Birthweight and Gestational Age. His research interests center on causal models in statistics.

Tami Tuck, Associate in Research, serves as Research Program Coordinator. As chief research assistant to Dr. Miranda, she manages the manuscript submission process, coordinates CEHI's research agenda, as well as special events. Tami has been at Duke University since 2001 working with the Duke School of Medicine in the Office of Student Affairs and with the Department of Pediatrics in the Office of Pediatric Education.
