Graduate student volunteers provide interactive environmental education instruction and support for teachers and students in three Durham, NC elementary schools -- E.K. Powe, C.C. Spaulding and Forest View. Nicholas School students work in classrooms on a regular basis, take on special projects within the schools and provide environmental education support for interested teachers. Additional volunteer environmental education opportunities range from coaching local Envirothon teams to coordinating the annual Duke University Earth Day celebration.
The community outreach program is based on a service-learning model that allows both the recipient and the provider of the service benefit. Nicholas School students not only serve the community through their volunteer work, they also gain valuable communication and leadership skills through training and self-reflection.
