NewsChanges in Leadership in the Undergraduate Environmental Sciences/Policy
Program Beginning in the Spring 2004 Semester, Dr. Marie Lynn Miranda will step down as Director of Undergraduate Programs for the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences. Dr. Emily Klein will be the new DUS for undergraduates completing the Environmental Sciences B.S. Degree and the Environmental Sciences and Policy A.B. Degree. The following quote comes from an announcement that Dr. Miranda recently sent to all EN majors: "As many of you are aware, I have an active applied research program focused on children’s environmental health. I have been fortunate in the past several years to receive generous support from the federal government and several private foundations to allow this work to move forward. My research team, CEHI (short for the Children's Environmental Health Initiative), is in the midst of an exciting period where we are seeing the results of our work being implemented directly in communities. Because we believe this work has the potential to truly make a difference in the lives of young children, I would like to have the opportunity to spend more time on research and on working directly with community partners. As a result, I asked Bill Schlesinger, Dean of the Nicholas School of the Environment and Earth Sciences, to appoint a new Director of Undergraduate Programs." "I am delighted to report that Professor Emily Klein has agreed to take over the position, starting 1 January 2004. I know that you will enjoy working with Professor Klein, who is an excellent teacher and who has a tremendous commitment to undergraduate education." "I have enjoyed interacting with all of you and consider my time as Director of Undergraduate Programs as one of the most fruitful and rewarding experiences of my professional career." New Introductory Microeconomics Course The Economics department has revamped their introductory courses, and ECON 2D and ECON 52D have now been replaced by ECON 55D. The EN Program has requested that a section of ECON 55D be set aside for Environmental Science and Policy majors. By taking this section, EN majors do not have to take ECON 51D as a prerequisite. This reserved section will only be offered during the fall semester. During the fall 2003 semester, section 11D is the designated section. EN majors, or students who plan to declare the EN major, may contact the EN Program Office in order to obtain a permission number for the section. Undergraduate Research with Nicholas School Faculty The EN Program is working to provide more research opportunities for undergraduates within the Environmental Sciences and Policy department. Interested Nicholas School faculty members are encouraged to fill out a faculty research survey in order to advertise research opportunities to undergraduates. Interested students are encouraged to fill out a student survey in order for faculty members to evaluate students' skills and interests. From there, students and faculty members will be matched up in accordance to their needs and interests. Both surveys are available in the EN Program Office. |
