Research in Structural Geology &
Tectonics
Structural and tectonic studies by Dr.
Jeffrey Karson and graduate students focus on
the relationship between magmatic construction and mechanical
extension in divergent and transform plate boundaries. Investigations
cover a wide range of geographic and geologic settings that
provide different perspectives on this central theme.

Location map for areas of on-going
Duke structural and tectonic studies: YELLOW=oceanic settings
(Atlantis FZ oceanic core complex; MARK Area; Hess Deep in
the Equatorial Pacific)- RED=continental areas (Turkana and
Rukwa areas of the East African Rift; East Greenland Volcanic
Rifted Margin; Anti-Atlas Suture Zone, Morocco).
The material below is arranged to roughly follow the Wilson
Cycle of oceans opening and closing. (see Emily Klein for more). The slide shows represent
progress reports in these areas. The images are arranged
in a specific order to give an introduction, summary of
the geology, and interpretation of each area. Information
provided here is intentionally brief. Interested readers
should see publications and recent abstracts under the
web site for Jeffrey
Karson or graduate students as indicated.
