Events >> 75th Anniversary
In 2006, the Duke Forest celebrated its 75th birthday.
In 1931 over 4,600 acres of newly purchased University
land were brought under the stewardship of Dr. Clarence
Korstian, and the Duke Forest Teaching and Research Laboratory
was born. From those early years the Forest has grown to
include over 7,000 acres of land, and the academic uses
of the Forest have broadened well beyond the original forestry-oriented
objectives to encompass a variety of disciplines in the
natural and environmental sciences.
To commemorate this
special milestone, the Duke Forest is proud to release The
Duke Forest at 75: A Resource For All Seasons, by
Ida Phillips Lynch. This book explores the rich natural
and cultural history of the Forest, its connections to
Duke University and the surrounding communities, and the
ground-breaking research that takes place there.

The
book was unveiled at the Duke Forest Anniversary Celebration
and Research Symposium, held October 19th and 20th, 2006.
This event was a major success, with researchers and friends
of the Forest from across the country coming together to
reflect on the history and evolution of the Duke Forest
as well as its current role as a leading teaching and research
facility.
