Marine Lab Policies, Procedures and Protocols
Facilities Use -- Boat and Canoe Use -- Canoe User Safety Rules
CANOE USERS PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF AND FOLLOW THE CANOE SAFETY RULES LISTED BELOW:
1) Life vests must be worn at all times while using the canoes. Anyone stopped by the US Coast Guard may be fined for not wearing their vests, and the fine will be paid by the individual and NOT the Lab. Life vests and paddles are located in a white locker labeled "CANOE LOCKER" near the canoe float. Please return all items when finished.
2) Do not use any canoe without signing it out. The sign-out sheets are on a clipboard inside the Canoe Locker. Research and teaching have priority. If a canoe is already signed out, DO NOT USE IT!
3) Do not sit on the sides of the canoes; use the seats.
4) Do not wear open-toed shoes in the canoes.
5) No drugs or alcohol are allowed in the canoes at any time. No person under the influence of drugs or alcohol is to operate a canoe under ANY circumstances.
6) When launching or recovering a canoe that you are unable to carry, please drag it on the wood decking up the concrete ramp. This will eliminate the need for expensive bottom repairs.
7) Canoes are NOT to be used before sunrise or after sunset, without permission, as the canoes do not have the lights required by the US Coast Guard. The canoe locker will be unlocked at 6am and locked at 7pm each day.
8) Canoes are to be operated by no less than two individuals, as it is difficult and unsafe to maneuver a canoe alone. Maximum occupancy is 3 individuals per canoe.
9) Canoes are only to be used around Pivers Island and in Taylors Creek. They are NOT to be used to get to Shackleford!
CANOE USE IS MONITORED. IF YOU ARE FOUND VIOLATING ANY OF
THESE RULES, YOUR CANOEING DAYS ARE OVER !!
