SCUBA diving from the R/V CAPE HATTERAS for
the purpose of scientific research is governed
by the UNOLS Research Vessel Safety Standards
and must be performed under the auspices of
the Duke/UNC Oceanographic Consortium (D/UNCOC)
Diving Program or another formal research diving
program which is a member of the American Academy
of Underwater Sciences (AAUS).
Rules, regulations and procedures for diving
under the auspices of the D/UNCOC Diving Program
are described in detail in the D/UNCOC Research
Diving Manual, copies of which are available
from the Diving Officer. All necessary forms
and plans must be returned to the Diving Officer
at least three weeks prior to the cruise.
When researchers from multiple diving programs
are participating in a cruise a single lead
Diving Control Board (DCB) will be designated
by agreement of all DCB's involved. The procedures,
rules and regulations that govern the diving
operation are those of the designated lead diving
program; however, the Master has the ultimate
authority regarding all personnel and operations
aboard the R/V CAPE HATTERAS and her small craft.
