R/V Susan Hudson - Rules/Regulations
Duke
University, Nicholas School of the Environment, Marine Laboratory,
operates the Research Vessel Susan Hudson for
research and teaching. The safety of passengers and crew is a primary
concern. The following rules are intended to minimize the dangers inherent
in shipboard operations and to protect the safety of everyone aboard.
1) The R/V Susan Hudson will not leave protected waters if, in the opinion of the captain, the work cannot be safely done due to the sea state.
2) Lace-up, closed toed shoes (no sandals) are to be worn.
3) Work vests are to be worn by anyone near an open gate or who is engaged in deploying over the side gear.
4) Groups bringing passengers weighing under 90 lbs. must also bring PFDs (personal flotation devices for those passengers; passengers weighing under 90 lbs. shall wear PFDs while outside of the cabin.
5) Passengers must be at least six years of age.
6) Passengers shall stay forward of the yellow painted line on the stern whenever trawling or dredging.
7) No one is allowed on the winch deck without the Captain's approval.
8) No trash is to be thrown overboard (this includes apple cores, bread, etc.).
9) Consumption of alcoholic beverages is prohibited aboard the vessel.
10) Due to unpredictable waves, all passengers will be aft of the bow when in an inlet, or at any other time the captain deems it necessary for safety.
11) Life jackets are an important piece of safety equipment, they may not be used as cushions.
12) All trawl and dredge limit of 27 passangers total.
