Bio: My current research focuses on developing predictive habitat models for the endangered North Atlantic right whale. I plan to provide managers with a predictive tool which provides a better understanding, in advance, of where right whales are likely to be on their foraging grounds off New England. In addition, I am using habitat profiles from the whales' calving ground to identify alternative, undiscovered calving areas. Part of my research also involves evaluating the effectiveness of management programs designed to protect these animals. Over the years my research and work experiences have varied greatly. My Master's degree focused on hawksbill and green turtle conservation in St. Croix, USVI where I lived for 4 months while developing a conservation strategy for nesting habitat. Before returning to Duke to pursue my doctorate, I worked for 3 years in the Protected Resources Division of the National Marine Fisheries Service in Washington, DC where I focused on conservation planning, legislation development and endangered species policy initiatives.
