Past Media Fellows

Michael Tennesen, freelance writer and author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Global Warming
Nicholas Environmental Media Fellow -- March 21 through April 16, 2005

“Sitting face to face with the faculty and graduate students at the Nicholas School allowed me, as a writer, to collect much richer material than just the facts and findings of their research. I got unforgettable personal narratives about trapping jaguars along the Mexican-Guatemalan border, communicating with indigenous people in the Amazon Basin, staying up all night to watch giant leatherback sea turtles lay their eggs on the moonlit beaches of Trinidad -- the kind of vivid details that can really make a story come alive for readers.

“As a Nicholas Fellow, I was part of a group of journalists doing month-long fellowships at Duke from all over the world – Shanghai, South Africa, Paris, Cologne, Washington., D.C., Baghdad and Hanoi. Sharing stories with them, seeing world news from their perspectives, greatly enriched my experience.”

Ann Kellan, freelance producer
CNN Radio and CNN Medical
Nicholas Environmental Media Fellow -- Sept. 13 through Oct. 8, 2004

"The Nicholas Fellowship was a wonderful opportunity to leave deadlines behind and delve more deeply into the issues. I had unrestricted access to the school’s field sites, classrooms, labs and faculty. The school is committed to raising the environmental policy debate above the liberal vs. conservative fist fight where it is mired. Being a Nicholas Fellow improved the way I will frame environmental stories, and change the way I discuss them with colleagues, clients and newsmakers themselves."
