Research Interests: I am working to understand the physiological responses of trees and forested ecosystems as they are modified by the environment, especially when the environment has been affected as a result of human activity. Much of my current research is associated with understanding plant physiological responses to elevated CO2 in Free-Air CO2 Enrichment (FACE) experiments, and how these responses affect physiological and ecosystem processes.  Another principal interest is in applying knowledge of physiological principles to understand processes in  forest canopies and ecosystems.  These responses underlie our ability to understand forest canopy function and predict canopy functioning in the future with environmental change.

This is a glimpse of what it is like working in the forest canopy at the FACE site in North Carolina. These are 15-year old loblolly pine trees and the guy in the center is more than 10m above the ground.
