MP Guidelines -- Relationship of MPs to Internships

It is not required that MPs be related to internships, but in many cases, they are a good venue for developing a good masters project. Internships often provide access to data and advice and even financial support.

Advising for Internships and MPs

Students interested in using the internship as the basis for their MPs should work closely with their advisors to ensure that reports expected of them under their internships are compatible with the requirements of the masters project.  Sometimes the product required by the internship supervisor is different from that required by the Nicholas School, resulting in the student having to prepare two versions of the report. Communicate closely with both the internship supervisor and your MP advisor to determine if this will be the case. PLEASE NOTE: because final MPs will be publicly available via search engines to persons outside of the Nicholas School and Duke, students must anticipate and address in advance any potential difficulties regarding proprietary or confidential information with both their internship advisor and their MP advisor.

Since students who base their masters projects on internships may not be able to finalize their topics until their internships are underway, they should be especially careful to consult with their MP advisors during their internships so that they will be able to prepare acceptable proposals early in their third semester.

Finding an Internship and Summer Funding

The Nicholas School's Career Services Office, can give you information about internships that will be available during the summer. They also have information on sources of funding to support masters projects conceived by students.

Lists of potential MP topics (click here) and internship opportunities that may lead to MPs (click here) are available online.

What if my Internship is not my MP?

Not all internships lead to good MPs, but they can be valuable work experiences nevertheless. Students who choose internships of this sort must have an acceptable MP plan that can be completed in the time remaining outside the internship.
