FAQs about the Duke Marine Lab

How do I get to Beaufort?
From Durham follow I-40 East toward Wilmington/Benson, Smithfield, Selma. (Do not take any 70 East business routes!). The correct exit is 306. Follow 70E all the way to Beaufort (through Goldsboro - be sure to take the by-pass!), Kinston, New Bern, Havelock, and Morehead City.) 70 East also is the main street, Arendell Street, in Morehead City. Continue on 70 E through Morehead over a high rise bridge (Newport River). From the base of the bridge it is .6 miles (or second right turn) to the turn for the Duke University Marine Lab. Cross the railroad tracks and go straight over the very small bridge onto Pivers Island. Ignore the first two left turns (these are federal NOAA buildings) and either turn left at the third drive or go straight to parking lots at the back of the island.

Where is the closest airport?
The nearest airports to the Duke Marine Lab are at New Bern, NC (252/638-8591), and Jacksonville, NC (910/324-3001). For more information on tourism, it may be helpful to contact these local centers; Carteret County Tourism Development Bureau 800/786-6962, 252/726-8148; Morehead City Chamber of Commerce, 252/726-6350; Ocracoke Tourist Information, 252/928-6711; Manteo Chamber of Commerce, 252/441-8144.

What are the computer facilities like?
The Duke Marine Lab houses two Sun Sparc stations as well as two Duke University public access clusters, MAC and IBM-PC, all connected to the Internet. Also available for use are 23 586-based workstations and two IMACs with word processing and statistics programs.

Are there any dining facilities at the lab?
The dining hall, which serves, breakfast, lunch and dinner, is open 12 hours a day with juice, milk, tea, and coffee, and the canteen is open 24 hours a day with soda and crackers. There also is a refrigerator available in the boathouse student lounge.

What type of transportation do you suggest?
If you bring a car, there are no parking fees, but you must register it with Donna Lynk in accounting upon arrival. Bicycles are also a good way to get into Beaufort and there are nice places to ride.

What facilities are available in the student lounge?
The student lounge in the boathouse has a TV and a satellite dish with converter that can be programmed to get what channels you’d like. There is also an electric keyboard, stereo, refrigerator, and microwave.

How much time do I spend at the Duke Marine Lab?
The CEM option makes it easy to spend both semesters of your second year at the Duke Marine Lab, however, any Master's student can spend one or two semesters at the lab. Spending three semesters at the lab is possible, but very difficult. Semester and summer programs also are available for undergraduate study.

Where would I live?
Dorms at the lab are for undergraduates only, but resident assistant positions may be available. Dorm space for Graduate students is available in the summer. The university also makes some furnished apartments available to graduate students, however, most Master's students live in houses or apartments that they rent.

Is there any way to earn money at Beaufort?
