Declaring a Major

How to Become an EOS Major

You should develop a Long-range Academic Study Plan and declare your major in the Pre-Major Advising Center. This is usually done during the sophomore year. We recommend that you speak with the EOS Director of Undergraduate Studies before you declare your major.

For specific information on the major, please see the A.B. and B.S. degree requirements.

How to Become an ENV Major

First, you should develop a Long-range Academic Study Plan and declare your major in the Pre-Major Advising Center. This is usually done during the sophomore year. We recommend strongly that you speak with one of the PMAC advisors directly involved in the ENV Program or with the Director of Undergraduate Programs for Environmental Sciences and Environmental Sciences and Policy majors.

Once you have declared an ENV major, email the undergraduate programs office at undergradenv@duke.edu to fill out a “Major’s Worksheet.” Then, schedule an appointment with the Director of Undergraduate Programs to discuss the choice of a faculty advisor compatible with your interests. If you have a preference, please let us know.

As soon as possible after declaring your major, you should meet with your advisor to refine your study plan for the ENV major. Your proposed plan must include the co-requisites and required courses, and emphasize the connections among courses around the focus study theme you have selected.

Finally, you should write a Focused Study essay and list of Focused Study courses as a basis for discussion with your advisor. The Focused Study requirements differ between the two ENV degree programs. For specific information, please see the A.B. and B.S. degree Focused Study requirements.
