Dear
Colleagues,
The
Duke Center for Environmental Solutions (CES) has been an
exciting start-up venture for the past four years. We are
now very pleased to be part of the continuation and substantial
expansion of the CES mission and activities at Duke through
the launch of the new full-scale Nicholas Institute
for Environmental Policy Solutions (NIEPS). For details,
please visit www.nicholas.duke.edu/institute.
I am delighted that, after an extensive national and international
search, Tim Profeta has joined us as the
new Director of the NIEPS; and that former U.S. EPA Administrator
William K. Reilly will serve as Chair of
the Advisory Board and Strategic Consultant to the NIEPS.
Tim Profeta may be reached at 919-613-8709 or Tim.Profeta@duke.edu.
The
CES website you are currently viewing will be maintained as
a resource supporting our continuing projects, particularly
the Reality
of Precaution project and its associated Transatlantic
Dialogues on Precaution. The website offers downloadable papers
and presentations from past CES events, including these Transatlantic
Dialogues as well as our Seminar Series on Environmental Institutions
and our annual Colloquia on Environmental Law & Institutions.
CES
recently bade fond farewell to our outgoing Executive Director,
Kathryn Saterson, who left in April to become
the Assistant Director for Ecosystem Protection in the National
Health and Environmental Effects Research Laboratory (NHERL)
of U.S. EPA. Kathryn may now be reached at 919-541-2535 or
saterson.kathryn@epa.gov.
And we send best wishes to our departing staff coordinator,
Carolyn Leith, who may now be reached at
carolyn.leith@mindspring.com.
During
the 2005-06 academic year, I will be on sabbatical
leave as a visiting professor at the Centre International
de Recherche sur l'Environnement et le Développement
(CIRED) and at l'École des Hautes Études en
Sciences Sociales (EHESS), in Paris, France. I should be reachable
in Paris at my regular email address, wiener@law.duke.edu,
and via CIRED at 33-1-43 94 73 73 or www.centre-cired.fr
.
I
look forward to hearing from you and to working with you to
find creative solutions to complex environmental problems.
Very
best regards,
Jonathan
