Field Trip Description
June 20 - 21, 2001
North Carolina is blessed with some of the most unique wetlands in the world. The pocosins
and Carolina bays are famous as much for the mystery that surrounds their origin as the
fact that they still appear to be accumulating large amounts of peat. The post conference
trip will consist of a 1.5 day trip to the coastal plains of North Carolina to visit these
wetlands as well as some of the most majestic salt marshes and bottomland hardwood swamps
in the southeastern United States. The cost for this trip is $135.00 and includes lodging
for one night, transportation and breakfast. Lunches and dinner will be arranged by trip
participants. Space is limited; the tour is planned for a maximum of 25 people. The trip
will be led by Dr. Curtis Richardson, Director of the Duke University Wetland Center.
Note: if you plan to go on this field trip then it is imperative that you make flight
arrangements to leave either late Thursday, June 21 (after 8 pm) from Raleigh/Durham
Airport or Friday morning, June 22. Accommodations for Thursday night are not provided by
the tour but the Wetland Center staff can provide names for local motels in the Durham
area.
