 Postdoc in Wetland Ecology

Duke University Wetland Center

A postdoctoral position is available for a highly qualified individual to work on a newly funded series of grants from NSF and USFWS to examine the concept of differential nutrient limitation and carbon sequestration in nutrient poor wetlands. The structure and function of ecosystems is governed by the patterns of nutrient limitation of the primary producers (e.g., plants) and heterotrophs (e.g., soil microbes). Often, these groups of organisms are limited by the same nutrient. However, an increasing body of evidence indicates that different nutrients can limit primary producers and heterotrophs in some ecosystems; this is known as differential nutrient limitation (DNL). This study examines why DNL occurs in some ecosystems (but not others), and what the consequences of DNL are with respect to the utilization vs. storage of carbon.  The project will use pocosin and saltmarsh ecosystems as model systems. The work includes field research and laboratory experiments, as well as oversite of the project sites in NC. The postdoc will be responsible for helping to set-up and manage the proposed experiments, and will be expected to develop an independent research program that compliments the broader goals of the project.

Applicants must have an excellent record of publication, strong quantitative skills, and be comfortable leading a team of undergraduate and graduate researchers. Prior experience working in wetland ecosystems is desirable.   The initial appointment is for one year with full benefits and a competitive salary. Continued funding is available for a second year provided satisfactory progress. The position is available immediately, and consideration of applications will continue until the position is filled. Individuals from under-represented groups are especially encouraged to apply.

Please send (preferably by email) a cover letter stating your research accomplishments and interests, a curriculum vitae, two representative publications, and the names and contact information for three references to:
